MacLean became aware of the online prison dating phenomenon while watching Making of a Murderer, and noticing that, while she and her friends were bemoaning the app dating field, convicted killer Steven Avery had at least three girlfriends during the course of the series.

A research rabbit hole revealed that prison dating sites are a three billion dollar a year industry. The reasons why a woman might be fed up with dating were clear. But dating prisoners? This pitch black pilot, in the vein of the Coen Brothers and Barry explores the pitfalls of when true crime meets true love.
