The Los Angeles premiere of Ali MacLean’s award-winning play SHE’S NOT THERE performed to packed houses at the Zephyr Theatre this past week as part of SHE NYC Arts / SHE LA Arts Summer Theatre Festival. SHE’S NOT THERE was selected by She LA Arts, which supports the creation and production of powerful, and commercially viable works by women writers, directors, and actors.
MacLean’s funny, poignant, and shocking play, which explores how depression can hijack a relationship, was awarded the 2019 SHE LA ARTS Best Production for best overall play.
In addition, the show picked up a performance award. 2019 SHE LA ARTS Best Actor went to Clayton Farris for his portrayal of Rob.
The play, which was the 2018 recipient of the John Gassner Playwriting Award, defies category. It starts out as a funny meet-cute styled rom-com but quickly descends into a chilling horror/drama with depression personified as an actual monster. The opening night performance featured a talkback with a Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services representative to discuss dealing with depression and coping with loved ones who suffer from mental illness.
